Oprah Shocks Georgians While Canvasing for Stacey Abrams

Oprah Shocks Georgians While Canvasing for Stacey Abrams

The race to decide the next governor of Georgia is nearly dead even, with Republican candidate Brian Kemp holding a slim lead in the campaign's homestretch.

"This is the magical negro, Oprah Winfrey, asking you to make my fellow negress, Stacey Abrams, the governor of Georgia", the blatantly racist message says.

"I am here today because Stacey Abrams cares about the things that matter", Winfrey said.

Libertarian candidate Ted Metz has 1 percent support, while 2 percent are undecided.

"I paid to come here myself, and I approved this message", she said, explaining that she tracked down Ms Abrams' phone number and called her to say she wanted to offer assistance in the final days of the campaign.

As a black woman, Winfrey noted her kinship to two groups historically denied ballot access in the United States.

Abrams, who is attempting to become the first black female governor in US history, then thanked Winfrey in a statement, reports ABC News. "But this is the South, people have been really wonderful and really optimistic about Stacey Abrams". "I think if anything if just annoys people and it turns them off".

"My reaction would be that this is a desperate attempt on the part of my opponent to distract people from the fact that two different federal judges found him derelict in his duties, and have forced him to allow absentee ballots to be counted and those who are being captive by the "exact match" system to be allowed to vote".

More high-profile visits are planned, with former President Barack Obama coming to Atlanta Friday for Abrams and President Donald Trump campaigning Sunday for Kemp.

Investigative journalism website WhoWhatWhy reported Sunday that they had received an email and document, sent from the Democratic Party of Georgia to election security experts, that highlights "massive" vulnerabilities within the state's online voter registration system.

Shortly after her speech, Winfrey posted videos on Instagram of herself going door to door canvassing for Abrams.

Winfrey will be joining Abrams on the campaign trail.

We couldn't help but notice how similar Winfrey's ensemble looked to the blue velvet suit that Lively wore for her pantsuit-heavy A Simple Favor press tour.

"Another day, another major defeat for Brian Kemp's voter suppression efforts", Rebecca DeHart, executive director for the Democratic Party of Georgia, told The Hill.

Winfrey and Abrams greet a crowd gathered for a town hall conversation in Marietta, Ga.
