6 injured after Fly Jamaica flight headed to Toronto crash-lands in Guyana

One of the aircraft's turbines is seen badly damaged after it apparently hit the barrier.

"Everyone was going insane, screaming, crying for their lives, everything", said passenger Invor Bedessee, describing how some people were injured getting off the flight.

"Where the aircraft veered off is about the exact same place the Caribbean Airlines (plane did)... so fortunately for us on this occasion, the extension (of the runway) was there so they were able to utilise the extension", Patterson said, adding that investigations into the matter had already started.

The plane barrelled through a chain-link fence before finally coming to a halt at the top of an embankment, Bedessee said.

Fly Jamaica also reported that two elderly passengers had been taken to hospital as a precaution after the landing, and Bedessee said any injuries were likely sustained during the evacuation process.

Bowen said 120 passengers and crew were on the plane.

A spokesman for Fly Jamaica said: 'We can confirm that Fly Jamaica flight OJ256 bound for Toronto has returned to Georgetown with a technical problem and has suffered an accident on landing.

Among those on board were 35 Guyanese, 82 Canadians, one American citizen, a Trinidadian and one Pakistani.

Fly Jamaica falls under the Wings Aviation company and operates scheduled flights from Guyana to Kingston, Jamaica; Toronto, Canada and New York, United States.

A spokesperson for Fly Jamaica said it is providing local assistance for its passengers and "will furhter release information as soon as it is available". The runway then was 7,400 feet (2,255 meters) but is now being extended to 10,000 feet.
