United States judge drops some charges against ex-Trump campaign aide Manafort

It also resolved the outstanding question of whether Manafort would be sentenced before he had finished cooperating.

Ellis dropped the charges on which the jury had deadlocked but did so without prejudice, meaning the prosecution could reintroduce them at a later date.

The hearing in federal court in Alexandria was largely procedural, but provided the first glimpse of the former Trump campaign chairman since he began cooperating with prosecutors in special counsel Robert Mueller's office.

The president has repeatedly called the special counsel's investigation a "rigged witch hunt", and rumors have circulated that Attorney General Jeff Sessions or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein could resign or be replaced by Trump, which could mean a new boss for Mueller.

However, U.S. district judge refused to wait on the cooperation of Manafort and Mueller.

In the United States judge of the circuit court of Alexandria (Virginia) said that the sentence manufactu the Floor, the former Chairman of the election headquarters of the President of Donald trump, will be presented February 8, 2019.

Manafort was convicted of eight counts in the tax and fraud trial in the Eastern District Court of Virginia earlier this year.

"I'm not the judge who ordered that confinement", Ellis said, but added he would keep those concerns in mind.

Manafort still may face an initial sentence of a decade or more in prison.

Prosecutors say Manafort falsified the documents, leaving off millions in income.

After months of refusing to assist Mueller's probe, Manafort finally took a plea deal in September and agreed to cooperate in return for reduced charges.

Manafort's trial and admissions of guilt focused on his lobbying work for pro-Russian Ukrainians and barely touched his time in the Trump campaign. He was in a wheelchair and had a bandage on his right foot.

Manafort had asked permission to wear a suit but Ellis rejected the request, saying he should be treated no differently from other defendants in custody post-conviction.
