Trump delivers speech to police chiefs in Orlando

Rosenstein and Trump delayed a planned September 27 one-on-one meeting until Monday to allow Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's contentious confirmation process to play out.

President Donald Trump addressed the International Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida on October 8, 2018.

"We will always have your back, now and forever", the president promised. Gov. Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi joined Trump at the Orange County Convention Center, but not Trump-backed gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis.

Trump also indicated that he was ready to keep working with Rosenstein. They fight us at every turn.

Trump gave a more somber speech than he does at political rallies, but he still slipped in some inflammatory asides.

Democrats do not provide adequate support for law enforcement: "The Democrats fight us at every turn, whether it's law enforcement or military".

But the lame-duck mayor noted that "overall gun violence was down...about 20 percent" of 2017 in Chicago and that promising trend was repeated during the first nine months of this year. "Politicians who spread this unsafe, anti-police sentiment make life easier for criminals and more risky for law-abiding citizens".

WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he has no plans to fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the Justice Department official in charge of the federal investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

The flight provided an opportunity for their most extensive conversation since news reports last month that Rosenstein had discussed the possibilities in early 2017 of secretly recording Trump to expose chaos in the White House and invoking constitutional provisions to get him removed from office.

Trump said he had ordered Attorney General Jeff Sessions to "immediately" go to Chicago and encouraged it to embrace the stop-and-frisk policing method that was used in New York City until it was deemed unconstitutional because of its overwhelming impact on minority residents.

"It works and was meant for problems like Chicago", he said.

The stop-and-frisk policy in New York City is a practice of temporarily detaining and questioning and sometimes searching people for weapons or contraband.

As a candidate, Trump even went as far as advocating a nationwide "stop-and-frisk" policy for law enforcement, but after heavy criticism clarified that he was just specifically referring to Chicago. Critics call it racist and ineffective. "There's no reason for what's going on there", Trump said, adding that Chicago should "strongly consider stop and frisk".
