Trump declares national emergency over US-bound migrant caravan

This was exhibited on Friday when the caravan, which had begun converging on the northern Guatemalan border, turned violent upon being denied entry into Mexico. The group aims to "provide shelter and safety to migrants and refugees in transit, accompany them in their journey, and together demand respect for our human rights".

Trump also said the U.S. will start to cut aid to the countries where the migrants are from.

The caravan of people are travelling through Central America and come from different countries such as Honduras and Guatemala. But "they are going to continue walking, and their feet won't heel as long as they keep walking", he said.

He says "no one is capable of organizing this many people". Citing violence and a lack of jobs, the migrants are trying to enter the US over the objections of Trump and many Republican lawmakers.

Lawmakers' failure to close immigration law loopholes has led to the threat being posed by a massive immigrant caravan headed for the United States border, former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Tom Homan said Monday.

Honduran migrants taking part in a caravan heading to the USA, rest as they arrive at the border crossing point Friday with Mexico, in Ciudad Tecun Uman, Guatemala.

Irineo Mujica of the group Pueblo Sin Fronteras says "It is a shame that a president so powerful uses this caravan for political ends". "We only want to work and if a job turns up in Mexico, I would do it".

Why is President Trump reacting so strongly?

Lorenzana added that El Salvador has significantly reduced violence, a key driver of migration, and that the flow of Salvadoran migrants has dropped 60 per cent in two years.

This is not the first caravan to threaten the southern border.

Any decisions on aid have to be approved by Congress, which could have a different composition depending on the results of the midterm elections on November 6.

He has said that the situation is a "national emergency" and says he has told border guards and the police to be ready. They don't come by themselves.

Most are heading for the United States' southern border.

They marched on yesterday through Mexico shouting slogans like "Si se pudo!" or "Yes, we could!"

He has threatened to stop giving aid to countries like Honduras and Guatemala, where numerous migrants have come from.

The group had exploded in size from the 2,000 people who had stopped overnight on Saturday.

"If you send us back, we will return!" a large crowd shouted in unison.

What did American kids think about the issue of immigration in the United States election in 2016? We don't know. It hasn't been verified. The caravan is still moving.

While no specific group has said it's responsible for organizing the current caravan, Pueblo Sin Fronteras, founded in 2010, has led asylum-seeking migrants through Central America for more than 15 years, most recently in April - another caravan that drew ire from Trump.
