Khashoggi 'body double' left Saudi consulate after killing

CNN released video of what it says is a Saudi operative disguised as Jamal Khashoggi leaving the back door of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, the day of his murder, to try to make it look like the journalist had left the building alive.

Madani is alleged to be part of the 15-man hit squad who came to the consulate to kill the WaPo columnist. Riyadh also said that 18 people had been arrested over their involvement in the incident.

While it was the first time that a member of the Turkish government has spoken publicly in detail about the case, Erdogan added little new to the accounts that have already emerged from private briefings by Turkish officials.

That's according to statements published early Monday by the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

Saudi exiles also said that official attempts had been underway to "trap" overseas critics of the government or lure them to return to the kingdom since Bin Salman became crown prince a year ago.

Meanwhile, the national and global press members continue to wait in front of the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to receive further information about the killing of the Saudi journalist. Our condolences go out to them. On Saturday, they acknowledged he was killed inside the building, saying it was an accident.

In a Fox interview Sunday, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said that the kingdom did not know where Khashoggi's body was, calling the killing a "tremendous mistake".

He added: "The individuals who did this, did this outside the scope of their authority".

The murder of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the kingdom's consulate in Turkey's Istanbul has sent a shock wave through Saudi critics in exile, with many revealing discreet government attempts to entice them into the kingdom's diplomatic missions in a bid to either force them to return or expose them to potentially the same fate as Khashoggi. That is unacceptable in any government.

This is Tennessee Republican Bob Corker, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, speaking to CNN on Sunday.

Earlier Friday, Sanders said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had spoken to the crown prince and briefed the president and John Bolton, Trump's national security adviser.

"Offering no proof, and contrary to all available evidence, they [Saudis] now expect the world to believe that Jamal died in a fight following a discussion".

"We're going to know a lot over the next two days about the Saudi situation", said Trump, who spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Sunday.

Salah Khashoggi, who lives in the Saudi city of Jeddah, has been unable to travel outside Saudi Arabia for several months, as his passport had been invalidated, according to sources close to the family.

For two weeks, Saudi authorities had said Khashoggi, who moved to the U.S. past year for fear of being caught up in the wave of arrests sweeping the kingdom, had left the building. US president Donald Trump has requested copies of these recordings, as pressure mounts on his administration's handling of the matter and the U.S.'s relationship with Saudi Arabia. He initially said he believed the Saudi account. Speaking late Saturday after a campaign rally in Nevada, Trump said he needs to learn more about the killing and will be working with Congress on the US response.

The newspaper said the four calls went to Bader al-Asaker, the head of Prince Mohammed's office.
