Jamal Khashoggi death: How did journalist Jamal Khashoggi die?

A Democratic congressman suggested Friday on CNN that Jared Kushner may have orchestrated the brutal murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, The Daily Beast reported. He insists Khashoggi is no longer inside the consulate and says Turkish authorities are welcome to search the diplomatic mission.

Turkish police and prosecutors have been searching the consulate as well as the consul's residence this week for evidence of what unfolded.

Over the past week investigators have been searching for the body of Khashoggi, which sources told MEE was begun to be dismembered before the journalist had died.

What is Saudi Arabia's version of events?

It comes as the Saudi government comes under increasing worldwide pressure over the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi - a journalist who was allegedly killed after entering the country's consulate in Turkey.

Amid worldwide outcry over Khashoggi's brutal murder, the Saudi public prosecutor said 18 nationals had been detained in connection to the probe.

He says: "We're going to find out who knew what when and where and we'll figure it out".

The kingdom announced a purge of senior officials following the announcement, including Saud al-Qahtani, an adviser to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and General Ahmed al-Asiri, a senior intelligence officials.

"The impartiality of a Saudi investigation would remain in question".

"If the President will not stand up to Saudi Arabia, then we in Congress must stand strong for our nation, our values and journalists throughout the world", Costa said.

Mr Chishti told Channel 4 News: "The role that I had was with regards to an independent think tank".

"Nobody should ever doubt about it".

"We don't blame anyone in advance, but we're not willing to keep anything covered".

October 6: Saudi Arabia says it has dispatched a team to "investigate and cooperate" with Turkish officials over Khashoggi's case.

"Discussions took place with the citizen Jamal Khashoggi during his presence in the consulate of the kingdom in Istanbul by the suspects (that) did not go as required and developed in a negative way, leading to a fistfight".

Erdogan and Saudi King Salman spoke by phone on Friday night, agreeing to continue cooperation and exchanging details on the case, the Turkish presidency said in a statement.

How have Saudi's Western allies reacted?

October 15: A Saudi-owned satellite news channel says the 15-member team referred to by Turkish media as Khashoggi's "hit squad" were "tourists" visiting Turkey.

The kingdom must be held to account.

"To say that I am skeptical of the new Saudi narrative about Mr Khashoggi is an understatement", tweeted US Senator Lindsey Graham, a longtime supporter of the kingdom.

Both said they "condemned the crime in the sharpest possible manner", adding that they expected "transparency from Saudi Arabia about the circumstances of (Khashoggi's) death and the background". According to numerous reports citing Turkish officials familiar with the probe, the journalist was ambushed by Saudi agents, cruelly tortured and murdered. The UAE Minister further stated that the royal decisions and actions taken following the investigation in this case reaffirm those values and the established principles which ensure the execution of law and justice.
