Arrest after Magna Carta theft attempt at Salisbury Cathedral

Dating back to 1215 the Magna Carta is a charter which includes over 60 clauses regarding the rules of the country, including the right to a fair trial.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The small English cathedral city of Salisbury at the center of an worldwide investigation into the Novichok poisonings is once again in the spotlight.

"The men really did a good job".

The suspect, whom police have not publicly identified other than to say he's 45 years old, was arrested for attempted theft, possessing "an offensive weapon" and inflicting criminal damage.

The Magna Carta has not been damaged and nobody was injured, police said.

Salisbury Cathedral, which has been central to the Skripal poisoning case this year after Russian agents said they were visiting it's "world-famous 132m spire", proudly boasts of the iconic piece of history on its website.

Meaning "great charter" in Latin, it is one of England's most celebrated historic documents.

"Elias of Dereham, priest and steward of the archbishop of Canterbury is thought to have brought Salisbury's copy of to Old Sarum in the days following the events at Runnymede and it has remained in the Cathedral's care ever since".

A man was arrested in Salisbury, England on October 25 for attempted theft of the Magna Carta.

The Magna Carta - was imposed upon King John in 1215 by a group of subjects - the barons - to limit his powers by law and protect their rights.
