Uefa Nations League: Superb Spain put six past Croatia

Uefa Nations League: Superb Spain put six past Croatia

Spain's Sergio Ramos celebrates after scoring the fifth goal against Croatia during the Uefa Nations League, September 11, 2018.

World Cup runners-up Croatia were humbled on their return to competitive football as a revitalised Spain ran out 6-0 winners at the Estadio Martinez Valero this evening.

The result is their heaviest ever defeat, the first time they have conceded six goals and the first game in which they have let in five since a 5-1 loss to England in 2009.

Luis Enrique admitted after Spain's 6-0 win over Croatia that he has the backbone of the team well in place now and there has been a notable power shift in personnel from Barcelona to Real Madrid.

That counted as one of four assists for Asensio on the night, with a more conventional one coming four minutes after the restart when he released Rodrigo who nutmegged Kalinic for his fourth goal in six starts for his country. Sergio Ramos added to the scoreline with a header from Asensio's corner after some awful marking.

That proved to be the final piece of goal-mouth action as Spain claimed a second straight Nations League win. It made it two wins out of two for Luis Enrique's side in their Nations League campaign.

La Roja got off to a slow start in the opening exchanges of the match, while Croatia seemed to have settled the better of the two teams as they surged forward easily.

Belgium, meanwhile, thrashed Scotland 4-0 at Hampden Park on Friday night, and have lost only one of their last 26 games, that being the World Cup semi-final to France. Three superbly weighted deliveries of different styles gifted his side further goals in the second half and underlined his remarkable quality.

Enrique took over Spain after the team's elimination against Russian Federation in the round of 16 of the World Cup.

The centre-back was consistently excellent in Russian Federation but was given a torrid time here.

Aspas impressed as Spain beat England 2-1 at Wembley in League A Group 4 on Saturday.

Although this was a night on which a new generation of global stars were born, Sergio Ramos was not to be left out as the defender lost his marker from a corner to head home his fourth goal of the season on 57 minutes.

"If I talk about Croatia I would talk about Modric and Rakitic", he said.
