Trump leads aggressive, all-out GOP drive to save Kavanaugh

A second woman has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, with an ex-classmate of Kavanaugh's from Yale accusing him of exposing himself to her at a party at the school. Christine Blasey Ford said Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her as a teenager. "I don't mean they're like 'Oh gee I'm a little unhappy, ' they're devastated", he said.

After delivering a speech to the U.N. General Assembly, President Trump lashed out at Deborah Ramirez, the second accuser to bring allegations of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. In an interview with the New Yorker published on Sunday, Ramirez said Kavanaugh had exposed himself to her at a party there in the early 1980s.

Kavanaugh said Ford may have been sexually assaulted at some point in her life, "but what I know is I've never sexually assaulted anyone".

Capitol Hill has become a wild cat and mouse game, as reporters scramble to track down the key swing votes who could make or break Kavanaugh's nomination.

"There's a chance that this could be one of the single most unfair, unjust things to happen to a candidate but I am with Judge Kavanaugh", Trump said in NY. "If such a thing had happened, it would have been the talk of campus".

Kavanaugh told Fox News that the claims against him were false, that he never attended a party like the one Blasey Ford described, and that he has never sexually assaulted anyone. Kavanaugh has denied the accusations of both women.

Ramirez's call for an investigation came despite her admission to the New Yorker that there are gaps in her memory of the incident, and that she expects her memories to be questioned as she had been drinking.

"I can still see his face, and his hips coming forward, like when you pull up your trousers", she was quoted as saying by the New Yorker. Kavanaugh has denied both allegations.

It said their stance was related to the possibility that Mr Kavanaugh was involved "in issues related to torture and rendition after 9/11", during his time working in the administration of George W Bush. He spoke in support of Debbie Ramirez the second women to go on the record with claims of sexual misconduct against the Judge.

Ford is scheduled to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, but her attorney sent a letter to committee Chairman Sen. In order to be appointed to the Supreme Court, Kavanaugh's nomination must be confirmed by the US Senate, which the Republican Party narrowly controls 51-49.

Republicans made a decision to hire a female attorney because of the risk that the panel's 11 Republican men - there are no GOP women on the committee - might say something insensitive to Ford.

"The Senate simply can not in good conscience vote on this nomination without a full fair FBI investigation of all these allegations", he said. Several Republican senators have said they won't decide how to vote on Kavanaugh until after the hearing.

He added that he had watched the Fox News interview broadcast on Monday, which he said was "so truthful".

Republicans have accused Democrats of a smear campaign by using the women's accusations of misconduct by Kavanaugh in high school and college to try to defeat his nomination.
