Tropical Storm Florence: SC Governor Declares State of Emergency

Tropical Storm Florence, now about 765 miles from Bermuda and 1,500 miles from the East Coast, is expected to regain strength and return to hurricane status later in the day Sunday. Models intensify Helene into a hurricane by Sunday, but look to turn this storm north before it gets close to the United States.

The tropical storm could begin to batter the southeastern U.S. by late on Wednesday, with Florence possibly making landfall around the Carolinas on Thursday or Friday.

Tropical storm Florence will strengthen to a hurricane on Sunday, forecasters predict, before it makes landfall on the USA east coast later this week.

Florence is expected to strengthen to a hurricane later this morning. However, this storm is forecast to dissipate in a few days.

The U.S. Navy is making preparations this weekend for its ships in the Hampton Roads area to leave port. But forecasters said that the risk of "direct impacts continues to increase" and that a huge coastal area from northern Florida to North Carolina should prepare for a major hit.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency Friday, and waived transportation rules to help farmers harvest and transfer more crops quickly ahead of the storm.

As for Florence, the hurricane center said Saturday morning that "gradual restrengthening is forecast over the weekend". The storm is moving west at 6 miles per hour.

Virginia has declared a state of emergency Saturday in anticipation of Tropical Storm Florence and its potential impact, according to a statement from Gov. Ralph Northam.

Category 4 storms, with winds of at least 130 miles per hour, can cause "catastrophic" damage, the hurricane center said, snapping trees, and toppling power polls.

Hurricane Florence regained Category 1 strength on September 9 as it continued to track to the U.S. East Coast, according to U.S weather officials. On the forecast track, the center of Florence will move over the warm waters of the southwestern Atlantic Ocean through Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Isaac, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) on Sunday, was about 1,500 miles east of the Windward Islands, forecasters said. Advisories warning of unsafe beach conditions or coastal flooding were in effect for parts of New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

Tropical-storm warnings have been issued for the southern Cabo Verde Islands.

It comes just weeks after Hurricane Lane brought "almost biblical rains" to the Big Island and also left parts of Oahu flooded.
