Serena Williams Is Fined $17,000 For Violations During Her US Open Loss

Serena Williams lost her cool at Saturday's U.S.

The final was won by Naomi Osaka of Japan - with the enormously talented 20-year-old claiming her first major title - but it will be remembered for the controversy prompted by a furious outburst from Williams.

That drew a second code violation - and, automatically, cost Williams a point.

"I've seen other men call other umpires several things and I'm here fighting for women's rights and women's equality and all kinds of stuff, but for me to say "thief" and for him to take a game?"

"He alleged that I was cheating, and I wasn't cheating", Williams told reporters later. "He's never taken a game from a man because they said 'thief, '" Williams said at her news conference.

Williams demanded an apology from the chair judge repeatedly, accusing him of attacking her character by insinuating she was cheating.

"You will never be on another court of mine as long as you live". How dare you insinuate I was cheating? You stole a point from me.

Williams was most unhappy about the third violation after she accused Ramos of being a thief for taking the point off her. "I know that she was frustrated about the way the match played out, but the way she stepped up after the final and gave full credit to Naomi for a match well-played speaks volumes about who she is". During the question period at the trophy ceremony, Selena said she didn't want to be rude, but wouldn't answer any questions. She asked fans not to boo and let Osaka enjoy the moment, calling her "a true champion". We're gonna get through this, and let's be positive.

The U.S. Open faced backlash for sexism earlier in the tournament after French player Alizé Cornet took off her shirt, which she realized she was wearing backwards, and put it on correctly while standing near the rear of the court.

Following the match, Williams complained to reporters that the umpire's ruling was outright sexist. Watch select excerpts above. "Actress Gabrielle Union called her "the best athlete the world has ever seen" and said Osaka demonstrated "#BlackGirlMagic & fierce determination". "This is not fair", Williams told Women's Tennis Association supervisor Donna Kelso. "This has happened to me too many times".

Even in defeat, Serena Williams proved she's a legend.

Williams coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, would later state: "If I'm honest I was coaching, [but] I don't think she looked at me".

Williams reached the final at Flushing Meadows and took on Australia's Sam Stosur.

Serena Williams has been fined more than £13,000 ($17,000) after receiving three code violations in the US Open.

"For me it blows my mind. This is outrageous".

"When a woman is emotional, she's "hysterical" and she's penalised for it". Should they be allowed have an influence on the result of a match?

'But you can not deny there have been a lot worse situations and I'm not going to name names.
