Putin pledges to send Syria missiles, enraging Israel and US

Monday's statement from Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said Russia will send the S-300 missile defence systems to Syria within the next two weeks.

Russia holds Israel responsible for the incident, saying the regime's warplanes "created a risky situation" that led to the downing of the Russian aircraft by Syria's S-200 missile defense system.

The French foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian issued the warning at the start of a week of summit meetings at the United Nations general assembly, where the U.S. national security adviser, John Bolton, also raised the prospect of an endless, grueling conflict, vowing not to pulling USA forces out of Syria before Iranian troops and their allies.

"The S-300 was a deal that had been signed with Syria in 2013, but Israel put its foot down on negotiation with Russian Federation and Russia decided that it was going to hold off delivering these units", he said.

The 15 Russian servicemen killed in a plane shot down mistakenly by the Syrian air defense forces have been nominated for the awarding of the Orders of Courage posthumously, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

"We are convinced that these measures will calm down some hotheads and keep them from careless actions which pose a threat to our troops", Mr Shoigu said. "I expressed to him our deep regret over the loss of the crew of the Russian plane that was brought down by irresponsible Syrian anti-aircraft fire".

Israeli military analyst Sharad Joshi warned of this in his infamous paper, Israel's Nuclear Policy: A Cost-Benefit Analysis, saying "the same Israeli Air Force, which had practically demolished the entire Egyptian Air Force in the first few hours of the 1967 war, was neutralised for the early part of the 1973 war".

However, he added, the Syrian missile suddenly changed its course and "locked on a target with a larger radar cross-section and slower speed", which was the Russian reconnaissance plane coming in for landing.

"According to information of our military experts, the reason (behind the downing) were premeditated actions by Israeli pilots which certainly can not but harm our relations", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

The Russian president also informed Assad of the S-300 delivery, it said.

Russian Federation backs Syrian regime forces while Israel conducts airstrikes against alleged Iran-backed forces operating along its border. The Israeli military, however, said that Syria's indiscriminate air defense fire was the cause of the accident.

The reluctant reconciliation with Israel has exposed the major shortcomings in Russia's military support for the al-Assad regime, which amounts to the third obstacle in the execution of the intervention (Moscow Echo, September 19).

Ostensibly to prevent such a mishap from reoccurring, Russian Federation has agreed to sell it's most advanced anti-aircraft system, the S-300, to the Syrian regime.

Failing the use of stealth aircraft such as the F-35 or electronic-warfare counter-measures, close-in weapon systems (CIWS) are expected to prove effective for detecting and destroying incoming missiles and enemy aircraft that penetrate defences.
