President Trump Suggested Spain Build Its Own Border Wall Across the Sahara

He revealed Mr Trump's suggestion during a lunch meeting in Madrid this week.

According to Josep Borrell, the USA president brushed off the skepticism of Spanish diplomats - who pointed out that the Sahara stretched for 3,000 miles - saying: "The Sahara border can't be bigger than our border with Mexico".

Borrell continued: "Well, yes, it is way bigger than the border with Mexico, and in any case it wouldn't be very useful to do that".

Although he declined further comments on the issue, a spokesman for the Spanish Foreign Ministry confirmed Borrell's comments to CNN.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The world's biggest desert stretches 3,000 miles across several global borders in North Africa - including the Morocco/Algeria border. Around a dozen countries lie wholly or in part within the Sahara, including Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Egypt, Algeria, Chad and Niger.

The United States' border with Mexico spans almost 2,000 miles, while the 3.5 million-square-mile Sahara is about 3,000 miles long and stretches across almost a dozen North African countries.

Mr Trump is said to have cited his own project to construct a divide with Mexico, which is yet to get off the ground itself, to stop illegal migrants from crossing the border into the US.

The left-wing government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, in power since June, has attempted to welcome the new arrivals - accepting migrant rescue boats such as the MV Aquarius after Italy rejected them.

However, if Spain was to build a wall as suggested by Mr Trump, it would be complicated by the fact that it would have to be built on foreign territory.

Spain has experienced a surge in migration, particularly over the past year as thousands of people attempt to make the risky journey across the Mediterranean in search of a better life in Europe. They are Europe's only land borders with Africa.
