Near 440,000 without power as Florence batters Carolinas

Preparing for the worst, about 9,700 National Guard troops and civilians were deployed with high-water vehicles, helicopters and boats that could be used to pluck people from the floodwaters.

From Thursday night through Sunday morning, CNN reported that Florence would travel only 150 miles, or slower than the average walking pace of 2-3 mph. "I'm going to get killed on the road, '" Bradley said. Utility companies said millions were expected to lose power and restoration could take weeks.

After appearing headed toward the North Carolina-Virginia border at one point, Florence shifted south and is now taking aim at the Carolinas.

"Catastrophic flash and eventually river flooding remains the primary concern as Florence continues to drift inland slowly across central (North Carolina)", the National Weather Service's Raleigh office tweeted Friday afternoon.

Hurricane Florence is at the doorstep of North and SC, and she's not going away anytime soon.

Florence could threaten the largest rainfall event in USA history, Hurricane Harvey, the 2017 whirlwind that settled over Texas and dropped more than 60 inches of rain, turning roadways into rivers, destroying homes and buildings and killing almost 90 people.

High winds and storm surge from Hurricane Florence hits Swansboro N.C., on September 14, 2018.

Its storm surge and the prospect of 1 to 3½ feet of rain were considered a bigger threat than its winds, which dropped way down from a terrifying 140 miles per hour - Category 4 - earlier in the week.

"On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm probably a 7" in terms of worry, she said.

US Southeast power companies said more than 188,000 homes and businesses in North Carolina and SC were without power early Friday as Hurricane Florence caused a deluge ahead of its landfall later in the day.

He said that the hurricane could only be captured on a super-wide lens, even from 400 kilometres up.

More than 722,000 homes and businesses were without power in North and SC early on Friday, utility officials said.

Florence's eyewall reached shore near Wilmington, N.C., just before 6 a.m. ET Friday; more than an hour later, the National Hurricane Center announced, it had "finally" made landfall near Wrightsville Beach. Hurricane-force winds extended 80 miles (130 kilometers) from its center, and tropical-storm-force winds reached out 195 miles (315 kilometers).

In Jacksonville, next to Camp Lejeune, firefighters and police fought wind and rain as they went door-to-door to pull people out of the Triangle Motor Inn after the cinderblock structure began to crumble and the roof started to collapse. Calls for help kept coming in as the wind picked up and the tide arrived, said city public information officer Colleen Roberts.

More than a million people were ordered to leave the coasts of the Carolinas and Virginia, with over 12,000 taking refuge in emergency shelters.

Schools and businesses closed as far south as Georgia, airlines cancelled more than 1,500 flights, and coastal towns in the Carolinas were largely emptied out.

Bertha Bradley said she has never favored evacuating ahead of hurricanes. "Lots of water, lots of wind, lots of storm surge". The department also encourages pet owners to make sure their animals are up to date on vaccinations and wearing identifying tags; bring a three-day supply of food, water, medicine and toys for pets; and have photos on hand in case pets get lost.
