Keys gets Osaka in US Open semis

Keys gets Osaka in US Open semis

2014 champion Cilic finds himself in the quarter-finals at the US Open for the fifth time and was particularly impressive in his fourth-round victory over David Goffin, although his opponent played for a significant portion of that match with an injury.

He will play either Serbia's Novak Djokovic or Australian John Millman in the last four.

For Osaka, who is 20, this is her first trip past the fourth round at a major.

"I've gotten a lot better managing my emotions once it gets to this part and knowing that everything is going to be probably more amped up", Keys said.

She is now coaching, and says her dream now is to bring a player to a Grand Slam tournament.

The Swiss superstar, owner of 20 Grand Slam titles, said the suffocating humidity on Arthur Ashe Stadium played a role in the defeat.

Djokovic served out for the second set and again drew first blood in the third, though Millman rallied to level at 3-3.

Kei Nishikori is headed to the US Open semifinal following a dramatic upset victory over Marin Cilic on Wednesday. I had to stay tough, especially in the second set.

The Serb was given a time violation warning and double faulted to offer Millman a break point opportunity before losing his first serve after running down the shot clock a second time.

SWEAT STOPS PLAY He was helped, no doubt, by one of the most unusual breaks ever seen at a Grand Slam tournament.

In Friday's semifinals the Wimbledon champion will meet Kei Nishikori, who beat Marin Cilic 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 to complete a historic double for Japan following Naomi Osaka's win over Lesia Tsurenko earlier in the afternoon.

Djokovic, rejuvenated by a fourth Wimbledon title after a spell of struggles with form and confidence since wrapping up the career Grand Slam in Paris in 2016, enjoys an equally comfortable record over Japan star Nishikori.

'We had some matches where I won in straight sets, but we had a lot of matches where it went the distance where a couple of points really decided the victor.

She raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set and then 4-0 in the second against the shaky Tsurenko, who finished with more unforced errors than points in her first major quarterfinal. He added: "I personally have never sweated as much as I have here".

Widely considered the best returner in the game, Djokovic kept accumulating chances - and then failing to cash them in.

"It was just one of those nights, I guess, I felt I couldn't get air". He was able to come through on only four of his 20 break points.

Cilic, who won their final meeting in straight sets, was pushed to the limit this time around with Nishikori extending his dominance to nine wins from 15 meetings.

Two inexplicable double-faults as the Japanese altered his return positions handed Nishikori the initiative and he produced a sumptuous backhand return victor down the line on set point to deepening Cilic's misery.

Djokovic was not to be denied though, as he timed the final break of serve to perfection, grabbing the advantage in game nine before serving out to love to seal his passage into the final four.

"I think the guy's beat a brick wall once", Millman said, "because he makes you work hard for every point and it's relentless".
