Kellyanne Conway downplays Kavanaugh allegations: He wasn't 'powerful' at the time

He has also denied allegations by a woman who claimed Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were both high school teenagers in 1982.

In a statement, the White House claimed that neither Kavanaugh nor anyone within the administration shared the accuser's name with Whelan. Kerri Kupec, an administration spokesperson, claimed that the new allegation was part of a "coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats created to tear down a good man".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the committee's top Democrat, wrote a letter to Grassley on Sunday asking to stop the confirmation process.

The agreement and the latest accusation set the stage for a dramatic showdown as Kavanaugh and Ford each tell their side of the story.

Late Saturday, an attorney for a woman believed to be one of the witnesses Ford said was at the party released a statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee and CBS News denying she was at the party. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the committee, to immediately postpone confirmation proceedings until the FBI could investigate. The views expressed here are exclusively hers. Republicans made a counteroffer on Friday of holding the hearing on Wednesday, and having Ford testify before Kavanaugh.

Reports say Ford's lawyers - Debra Katz, Lisa Banks and Michael Bromwich - agree she will go first, to be followed by Kavanaugh.

She says they were both taking part in a drinking game at a dormitory party where people sat in a circle and selected others to drink.

Ford's lawyers asked for another day.

The president's tweet brought blistering rejoinders from Democrats and a mix of silence and sighs of regret from his own party.

"We were told no decision has been made on this important issue, even though various senators have been dismissive of her account and should have to shoulder their responsibility to ask her questions", the attorneys for Ms Ford said.

The New Yorker said it contacted Ramirez after learning of a possible involvement in an incident with Kavanaugh and that the allegation came to Democratic senators through a civil rights lawyer.

The lawyer acknowledged to CNN that Keyser is a lifelong friend of Ford's.

In an email to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Saturday, Leland Ingham Keyser, a former classmate at the Holton-Arms all-girls school, said she doesn't know Kavanugh or remember being at the party with him.

His confirmation by the Republican-controlled Senate seemed assured until Ford alleged in a Washington Post interview that a drunken 17-year-old Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed and tried to tear her clothes off. And I was never told this story by her, or by anyone else. She also accused Kavanaugh of laughing at her in the aftermath and has said the FBI should investigate the incident.

The White House is approaching Ms Ford's potential testimony with trepidation, nervous that an emotional performance might not just damage Mr Kavanaugh's chances but could further energize female voters to turn out against Republicans in November.

A GOP Judiciary Committee investigator contacted Keyser last Tuesday, saying Keyser had been "identified" as attending that party and wanted to talk to her. Committee spokesman Taylor Foy said Keyser's name "came up" in its investigation.

In a statement, two of the male classmates Ramirez claimed were involved, the wife of a third male student she said was involved and three other classmates disputed Ramirez's allegation.
