Kavanaugh’s Accuser Has Now Come Forward

Ford said she was able to escape when Kavanaugh's classmate at Georgetown Preparatory School, Mark Judge, jumped on top of them and sent them tumbling. Kavanaugh has said he "categorically and unequivocally" denies the accusation.

But the allegations of sexual misconduct, particularly coming amid the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment, coupled with Ford's emergence could complicate matters, especially as key Republican senators, including Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, are under enormous pressure from outside groups who want them to oppose Kavanaugh on grounds that as a justice he could vote to undercut the Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion in the U.S.

In a statement released to United States media, Kavanaugh rejected the woman's claim, made in a letter to the Democrats vetting his nomination, that he tried to force himself on her during a party.

Kavanaugh was quickly defended by friends and acquaintances from the time who cast doubts on the alleged incident. It's perfectly obvious why Donald Trump would be eager to defend the principle that men must not have their careers derailed by accusations of sexual assault.

HIRONO: Have you ever faced discipline or entered into a settlement related to this kind of conduct? For the White House, another scandal might be one too many.

"I'm fairly confident that our Founding Fathers did not intend the process to work this way", he said. "That is what we have to change", Hirono said in a statement Sunday.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that he would like to have Kavanaugh confirmed by October 1, the start of the Supreme Court's new term. He said he recalled his wife using Kavanaugh's last name and expressing concern that Kavanaugh - then a federal judge - might someday be nominated to the Supreme Court.

In a written response to a follow-up question from Sen. He said he puts "some weight" on Kavanaugh's denial.

At minimum, it seems likely that additional hearings will need to be scheduled to explore the truth of the allegation.

'I thought he might inadvertently kill me, ' said Ford, now a 51-year-old research psychologist in northern California, to The Washington Post. Kavanaugh, who attended an all-boys school, would have been 17. It added the letter to Kavanaugh's file but has not opened a criminal investigation. The Post's article included an interview with Ford's husband and her lawyer, Debra Katz, and described a therapist's notes from 2012 in which Ford told of the attack. 'Now I feel like my civic responsibility is outweighing my anguish and terror about retaliation'. "Instead, they said nothing during two joint phone calls with the nominee in August, four days of lengthy public hearings, a closed session for all committee members with the nominee where sensitive topics can be discussed and in more than 1,300 written questions", Grassley's office released in a statement Sunday afternoon.

"I think at this late date, we're going to have to wait and see if this person decides to come forward to test that in the light of day", Sen.

On Sunday, Feinstain said the FBI should investigate now that Ford has spoken to the Post.

The Washington Post reports that Ford has already submitted to a polygraph and passed. "I hope the attacks and shaming of her will stop and this will be treated with the seriousness it deserves". "I was very ill-equipped to forge those kinds of relationships".

In response to the Post story, the White House sent the same statement to press outlets including the Guardian. He said such a rushed process could lead to a situation such as what happened with Clarence Thomas, who was confirmed to the bench despite sexual harassment allegations from Anita Hill.
