Eliud Kipchoge sets new marathon world record in Berlin

Eliud Kipchoge sets new marathon world record in Berlin

'I lack the words to describe how I feel, ' said Kipchoge, who ran the second half of the race in a rapid 60min 33sec. "Eliud Kipchoge finishes with a new world record, that will be remembered for decades". I have trained so well for this race and have full trust in the programs of my coach.

Kipchoge ran his first 5km in 14:24, a whole 1:26 ahead of world record pace, and reached 10km in 29:01.

The 33-year-old's official time came in at two hours, one minute and 39 seconds to shave one minute and 18 seconds off Dennis Kimetto's old mark from 2014.

Kipchoge kept up the pace to sprint through the Brandenburg Gate and complete a world record race that cements his reputation as one of the greatest runners of all time.

Up front, the race was in control, but the world record was slowly slipping from Kipchoge's grasp. "So I want to thank everyone who has helped me", said Kipchoge, who had won in Berlin in 2015 and 2017.

Amos Kipruto finished second in 2:06:22, with former world record holder Wilson Kipsang third in 2:06:47.

The final pacemaker, Josphat Boit, led Kipchoge through the half-way point in 1:01:06 before dropping out at 25 kilometres, covered in 1:12:24.

Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama took to Twitter on Sunday morning to congratulate his fellow Kenyan, posting a picture of the pair at Spurs' training ground holding a club shirt with the runners name on it.

"I am just so incredibly happy to have finally run the world record as I never stopped having belief in myself".

Things looked to have fallen apart for Kipchoge's world record hopes after 15km.

"It was hard", Kipchoge added. Ironically, it took a world record setting run by Kipsang in 2013 in Berlin to beat Kipchoge in what was just his second marathon since moving from the track.

He has notched up 10 wins from the 11 marathons he has raced, winning three times not only in Berlin but also London, with victories in Rio for Olympic gold as well as in Hamburg, Rotterdam and Chicago.
