Dallas police dismiss officer who fatally shot man in his home

The Dallas Police Department has fired Officer Amber Guyger after she fatally shot a black man in his own home earlier this month.

What is clear is that Guyger turned herself in to the authorities almost three days after she killed Jean.

Amber Guyger, who was with the Dallas Police Department since 2013, was charged with manslaughter for shooting and killing Jean in his apartment September 6, after claiming that she thought the apartment was hers.

Under civil service rules, Guyger has the right to appeal the termination. Following the completion of the Texas Rangers' and the Dallas County District Attorney's Office's investigations in the case, it will be up to a grand jury to decide whether to indict Guyger for murder, manslaughter or not at all.

The Associated Press reports that Dallas has let Guyger go, citing the allegations against her, following an internal investigation into Guyger's behavior.

"Officer Guyger was terminated for her actions", the news release said.

Guyger, who lived in the apartment below Jean, had just gotten off duty and parked on the wrong floor in the parking garage at the apartments, the affidavit said.

Later, Dallas police spokesman Sgt. Warren Mitchell said in a written response that adverse conduct is "conduct which adversely affects the moral or efficiency of the Department or which has a tendency to adversely affect, lower, destroy public respect and confidence in the Department or officer".

"Officer Guyger was terminated for her actions", the document continues.

A funeral for Jean was planned for Monday in his native Saint Lucia, Dallas media reported.

Entering the darkened apartment, she noticed a figure whom she said she mistook for a burglar and fired twice, striking Jean once in the chest, the affidavit said.

When she turned on the lights, she realized she was in the wrong unit, according to the document, which appeared to be based nearly entirely upon the officer's account. When she opened the door fully, Guyger saw a "large silhouette" across the room and began giving commands, which Jean "ignored", the affidavit said.

Guyger's termination comes 18 days after she shot and killed Jean inside his unit at Dallas' South Side Flats apartments.
