Brett Kavanaugh's friend Mark Judge declines to testify about alleged sexual assault

Hill, who is most famous for accusing then-judge Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment back in the 1990s, during his own confirmation hearing, demanded that the FBI investigate the allegations of sexual assault against Judge Kavanaugh in order to avoid the same "sham proceeding" she experienced. But Hill said it was really a question about the conditions of Ford's testimony are "actually tenable".

Kavanaugh, 53, has denied the allegations, calling them "completely false".

Debra Katz, a lawyer for Ford - who only came forward publicly on Sunday after trying to keep her name hidden for more than a month - had said earlier she was ready to speak under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

He has also cast fresh doubt on whether the alleged attack even happened.

"We're looking to get this done as soon as possible", Trump told reporters at the White House.

Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, said, "I just want to say to the men of this country, 'Just shut up and step up.' Do the right thing for a change". "I don't think a lot of people are aware of the level of threats that someone in this position can face", Feldman said. Also, Hatch said Ford might need to address some apparent discrepancies between her therapist's notes, her attorney's public statements and her letter to Sen.

The GOP chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Chuck Grassley of Iowa, said an FBI investigation wouldn't have bearing on Ford's testimony so "there is no reason for further delay".

The confirmation fight comes just weeks before November congressional elections in which Democrats seek to win control of Congress from Mr Trump's fellow Republicans.

Ford's attorneys said in the letter that they wanted an FBI investigation of the incident before she testifies in front of the committee in Washington.

Of course, Ford knew that her life was about to be bad the minute she stepped forward. President Donald Trump: "It wouldn't bother me, other than the FBI, John said, that they really don't do that".

"If she shows up and makes a credible showing that'll be very interesting".

"They partied as much as you would expect teenaged boys to party", she said adding that the level of partying wasn't unique to the Washington D.C. private school scene.

Democrats said they wanted more time for the FBI to investigate - and more witnesses besides Kavanaugh and Ford, hoping to avoid what would turn into merely a "he said, she said" moment. That underscores a desire to avoid antagonizing female voters at a time when the #MeToo movement has made sexual abuse a major political dynamic.

Professor Blasey Ford says Mr Kavanaugh pinned her on a bed and tried taking off her clothes during the high school party.

Ford has been asked by the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify Monday, but her lawyers told the committee that Ford would like to see her allegation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her over three decades ago investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation before she testifies to the the committee. Some could even call a presidential order for the FBI to investigate a state-law matter to be an abuse of power.

Trump has repeatedly said that he is open to delaying the confirmation process, but has continued to praise Kavanaugh as an "outstanding" person and to accuse Democrats of playing politics with his nomination.

Ford's allegations come almost a year after the #MeToo movement was popularised following the numerous allegations of sexual misconduct by Hollywood Producer Harvey Weinstein, who has since been charged with rape and other sexual crimes.

Grassley said in a statement Tuesday night that there were never any plans to sit Ford and Kavanaugh together at the witness table, as Banks told Cooper during the interview.

Kavanaugh denies the charge and will apparently tell his side of the story before the Senate Judiciary Committee next Monday.
