Ayanna Pressley is latest to take down House incumbent

The Boston city councilwoman just beat 10-term incumbent progressive Congressman Michael Capuano in the Democratic primary in MA, securing the Democratic nomination for Congress for Massachusetts's 7th district.

Ayanna Pressley didn't just upset Michael Capuano on Tuesday.

With no Republican challenger in her district, Pressley's path to Congress this November is clear. Capuano - along with the entire MA congressional delegation - supports the "Blue Lives Matter" bill, making assaulting a police officer a federal crime.

Only two of Massachusetts's nine House members are women, and one is retiring.

A survivor of sexual assault at Boston University and during her childhood, Pressley has been a vocal supporter of victims of sexual violence since long before the #MeToo movement.

Before becoming a councillor she worked for Senator John Kerry and Congressman Joe Kennedy - whose grandfather, John F Kennedy held the seat Ms Pressley is set to win before he became president.

While pundits and politics watchers have been predicting a surge of women in Washington during this year's midterm elections, Massachusetts House candidate Ayanna Pressley confirmed another exciting trend: Up-and-coming, young, progressive women candidates destroying male incumbents in primaries across the country.

They moved to Brooklyn, and Pressley attended Boston University from 1992 to 1994, but left school to work full time at a hotel to support her mother. Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Pressley shortly after her win.

Conceding on Tuesday, Mr Capuano said: "Clearly the district wanted a lot of change".

Since there is no Republican representative on the ballot, she is most likely to be heading to Congress in 2019.

Later during Pressley's victory party, her stepdaughter Cora stood in silence with tears rolling down her face as she listened to Pressley speak.

Pressley shares many of her positions with Ocasio-Cortez, but stops short of describing herself as a socialist.

"I knew I would be demonized as entitled and what no woman would can ever be, ambitious.space" But change can win", she said to loud cheers. She joins a number of other black women who've won their primaries this year, including Stacey Abrams, who's running for governor in Georgia, Lauren Underwood, running for a congressional seat in IL, and Jahana Hayes, who's also running for a seat in Congress from CT.

Democratic candidate for U.S House of Representatives Ayanna Pressley's step-father Warren Maynard celebrates after Pressley won the Democratic primary in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S., September 4, 2018.
