U.S. to act 'very strongly' if Syria uses chemical arms: Bolton

U.S. to act 'very strongly' if Syria uses chemical arms: Bolton

Bolton and Patrushev said Ukraine was discussed, but they did not immediately provide details.

Bolton told Reuters earlier this week that he's "heard the idea being suggested" but said the usa hasn't discussed recognizing Israel's claim.

Russian Federation did not request any waivers, he adds.

As for the Syrian issue and the role of Iran, Bolton said that the US position is that "all Iranian forces return to Iran", adding that he and his Russian counterpart talked about a variety of ways in which it might be accomplished through a series of steps.

Patrushev said he invited Bolton to have the next meeting in Russian Federation, but no specific time frame was set.

Addressing journalists the next day in Geneva, Bolton revealed that Patrushev had proposed "a geographic constriction of Iranian forces" in Syria "in exchange for the suspension of USA oil sanctions" on Iran, which are scheduled to take effect in November.

"I know a lot of American people that aren't very happy with neoconservatives", Paul said, arguing that they are working behind the scenes in both parties to "maintain the empire".

"I think that's a legitimate act of self-defence on the part of Israel", Bolton said.

Mr Bolton's comments come after months of pressure from the United States government, following Donald Trump's decision to abandon a global nuclear deal with Iran.

The administration has demanded that Iran, a Russian ally in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, withdraw all of its "regular and irregular" military forces from Syria.

"We are very very early in the process of considering what we are going to do with New START or the INF treaty", he said, referring to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces pact.

Bolton was asked whether Trump's hard week in Washington, including the felony convictions of former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen, Trump's former personal lawyer, made him "concerned that your own president is a security risk".

Both officials said they planned to meet again, but no date or venue has been set.

Bolton, a frequent critic of the United Nations who served as US ambassador to the U.N. under George W. Bush's administration, also offered tough new language about the U.N. -backed Human Rights Council based in Geneva.

"We said if there is such a sentence, then the document should also include a phrase stating that Americans should not interfere in the domestic affairs of other countries", Patrushev was quoted as saying.

An official source at the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry told SANA that the Western countries, especially the US, France and the United Kingdom, are once again resorting to a campaign of threats, hypocrisy and misinformation against the Syrian Arab Republic as part of the continued declared support for the armed terrorist groups, particularly Nusra Front and its affiliated groups.

Bolton rejected claims by some United Nations officials who insist the council gets its funding through the regular United Nations budget - meaning that its operating expenses can't be specifically targeted. We hope that's right.
