Trump received letter from North Korea's Kim on August 1 - White House

A Department of Defense scientist said Thursday that the remains returned to the U.S.by North Korea are "consistent" with those of other Americans recovered from the Korean War.

On Wednesday, 55 sets of remains were repatriated to the United States, where they were received at a ceremony in Hawaii.

Both McKeague and Byrd expressed hope that North Korea would allow the resumption of joint U.S.

But questions have deepened over Pyongyang's commitment after USA spy satellite material detected renewed activity at the North Korean factory that produced the country's first intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the United States.

The United States has sent North Korea $22 million since 1990 as it recovered an estimated 629 sets of remains, according to a spokesman for the US military.

In addition, the 55 transfer cases handed over by the North Koreans contained equipment associated with the American military, such as boots, canteens, buttons and buckles, Byrd said.

Byrd said some of the remains appear to have come from the eastern side of the battle site, which was where mainly Army personnel fought.

McKeague said that DPAA has a DNA database from 92 percent of the families of the estimated 7,700 USA service members still listed as missing from the 1950-53 Korean War and DNA comparisons with the remains from the 55 cases would begin shortly.

In July, Kim Jong Un's regime said the U.S. was making "gangster-like" demands following a meeting with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Trump has sought to show progress from his June 12 summit with Kim in Singapore. "We couldn't be sure how many individuals were in each box".

"Looking back on it, I would say it was challenging but very successful", said Byrd, who took part in the joint field operations that stretched from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s. The remains will immediately be subjected to DNA testing to see if they match DNA in the DPAA's database.

Lab officials also will check to see whether any teeth are among the remains, and if so, compare them with a database of dental records of service members missing from the Korean War. He said that DPAA has chest radiographs for about three-quarters of the missing from the Korean War. Byrd said he couldn't say how long it would take to make a first identification or identify all of the remains.
