Tropical storm Debby strengthens in Atlantic but is expected to weaken soon

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm John is expected to strengthen rapidly and become a hurricane by Monday afternoon and a major hurricane by Tuesday.

Debby transitioned to a tropical storm Wednesday morning with a greater concentration of storms near its center. While John is expected to pass west of Baja, an increase in storm size or an eastward jog in the track could bring tropical storm conditions to the region.

The fourth storm of the season formed around 11am today about 1,000 miles west of the Azores, but it poses little threat to anything but fish.

Enhanced rainfall from deep tropical moisture surrounding Hector will affect the Puna and Ka'ū Districts of the Big Island as the hurricane passes by south of the state on Wednesday and Thursday.

Far out to sea was newly formed Tropical Storm Kristy, which had sustained winds of 50 miles per hour and could become a hurricane.

National Hurricane Center (NHC) Forecaster Blake noted on August 6 at 5 a.m. EDT that "The convective pattern of John has become significantly better organized during the past several hours, with a large central dense overcast forming and cloud top temperatures to minus 85 degrees Celsius".

A tropical storm watch was in effect for a much broader swath of coast, from Los Barilles to Todos Santos. The Mayor's office has issued an emergency proclamation for Hawaii Island.

Hurricane Hector remains a category four storm as it slowly moves west towards the south of Hawaii.

A high surf warning is also in effect for east-facing shores of the Big Island.

Over the next few days, Hector is expected to gradually weaken.
