Serena and Venus Trade Shots Ahead of Upcoming US Open Match

The two former world No 1s will meet for the 30th time in their illustrious careers after the 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena won 6-2 6-2 in the opening match of the night session on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Venus, ranked 16th, advanced to Friday's third round matchup by defeating Camila Giorgi 6-4, 7-5 earlier on Wednesday.

She was ever-so-slightly more forthcoming during her on-court interview, joking, "The last time we played, at the Australian, it was two against one", a reference to the fact that Serena was pregnant when she beat Venus in the 2017 Australian Open final. It will be their sixth face-off in NY. The last time they played each other though, in the third round in Indian Wells 2018, Venus won the match in straight sets.

Serena Williams is expecting a tough test against sister Venus as they prepare to clash for the 30 time on Friday in the third round of the US Open.

- Alize Cornet said she was overwhelmed by the support she received when she was hit with a code violation for removing her shirt on court.

"At least this time, " Venus told the crowd, "it'll be fair".

"It's a tough match to have so early in the tournament".

"The best part is we bring out the best in each other", Williams added. Anna Wintour looked pleased as she watched Williams beat Witthoeft. "But whoever you're feeling like - me or Venus - it'll work". I think they both move extremely well.

In other action, Sloane Stephens made it through after being taken to three sets by Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine, the defending champion eventually winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

"I think both of them are great athletes".

Cornet said she was stunned that the furor had caused so much controversy and was happy to accept the USTA's apology.

This was his first Grand Slam event since Wimbledon previous year. Julia Gorges, meanwhile, found herself upset by Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets.

Estonia's Kaia Kanepi followed up her first round win over world number one Simona Halep by seeing off Jil Teichmann of Switzerland, 6-4, 6-3.
