Newspapers fight 'sustained assault' on free press

Hundreds of US newspapers on Thursday launched a coordinated defence of press freedom and a rebuke of President Donald Trump for denouncing some media organizations as enemies of the American people.

In response to The Boston Globe's request, more than 300 news outlets across the US, along with a few worldwide publications, printed editorials promoting the free press with many using the hashtag #EnemyofNone.

Trump has frequently criticized journalists and described news reports that contradict his opinion or policy positions as fake news.

Trump tweeted that he supports a free press but much of what the U.S. press prints is "fake news".

The US Senate on Thursday passed a resolution by unanimous consent affirming that the media "is not the enemy of the people".

In an effort led by the Boston Globe, hundreds of newspapers around the country pledged to unite in criticism of the president for his rhetoric in editorials.

The New York Times calls Trump's attacks as risky to the lifeblood of democracy, while the Topeka Capital-Journal in Kansas which endorsed Trump in 2016 says they're sinister and destructive and must end now.

"If you haven't already, please subscribe to your local papers", said the Times, whose opinion section also summarized other editorials across the country.

"For more than two centuries - since the birth of our nation - the press has served as a check on power, informing the American people about corruption and greed, triumphs and tragedies, grave mistakes and misdeeds and even ineptitude and dysfunction", wrote the Albuquerque Journal in New Mexico. In true Trump style, he followed that up by saying "we are winning" the fight.

The paper on Wednesday published an editorial headlined "Journalists are not the Enemy".

"The people who read editorials don't need to be convinced", he said.

The president in a barrage of tweets reacted to the coordinated editorials against him: "THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA IS THE OPPOSITION PARTY".

The San Francisco Chronicle will not be participating in Thursday's joint effort.

"It's not that we disagree with concerns about the president's language in speeches and on social media", the Capital Gazette Editorial Board wrote.

The Globe's call represents one side of a debate about how the media should view and respond to the president's splenetic attacks on the press - or whether it should do anything at all.

"Donald Trump is not responsible for the eroding trust in the media", Finley wrote.

However, some newspapers decided not to run editorials on the issue, including The Washington Post.

On its own editorial page it quoted short extracts from dozens of newspapers that defended press freedom as part of the orchestrated protest in print.
