Harper claimed on revocable waivers by mystery team

Adams was placed on a revocable waiver Friday, along with teammates Bryce Harper, Daniel Murphy, Gio Gonzalez and Mark Reynolds, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

The club also activated pitcher Carlos Martinez, 26, from the 10-day disabled list.

The St. Louis Cardinals have claimed former Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams off waivers from the Washington Nationals.

Whatever decision the Nats make, and it's likely one out of the first two choices, will tell us a lot about how they want to play out the rest of the season: keep Harper and they think they have a chance, trade him and they're looking to start over next season. Washington is six and a half games out of a postseason position and is 3-7 in its last 10 games.

Murphy got off to a slow start this year coming off of major surgery but is hitting.300/.341/.442 on the season and has been particularly hot of late.

The 29-year-old Adams is slashing.257/.332/.510 with 18 home runs.

Adams is in transit and is expected to join up with the Cardinals organization in the upcoming days.

But any contribution Tuesday night won't come from shortstop Addison Russell, who was scratched from lineup due to a sore right throwing shoulder.

Wisdom, 26, goes back to the minors, where he played 747 career games before getting his first major league call-up August 11.
