ABC Reportedly "Recommended" Oscar Changes, Including Adding Popular Film Category

ABC Reportedly

The nominations for next year's ceremony will be announced on January 22. Eligibility requirements for the popular film category will be forthcoming. To that end, the Academy set an earlier air date for the 2020 telecast, moving it from February 23 to February 9.

The 2018 awards show, which clocked in at nearly four hours, was the least-watched Oscars to date. Those categories will not be removed from the telecast; instead, "the winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast". Dawn Hudson, it has been revealed that Outstanding Popular Film will be a new award at next year's ceremony, one of three changes to the show shared Wednesday.

It's unclear what exactly spurred this decision to consider a category for "popular film" and what exactly that would entail (likely big box-office movies that aren't necessarily considered Oscar-worthy).

The 2019 Oscars will look a little different.

Last night, the Board of Governors met to elect new board officers, and discuss and approve significant changes to the Oscars telecast.

This week, there was a meeting at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that produced a few new changes that will, ostensibly, remold how the Oscars are handled from here on out.

Oscar statues are seen backstage during the 88th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on February 28, 2016 in Hollywood, California.

The Academy has also announced future televised ceremonies will be limited to 3 hours, again with an eye to making the telecast more palpable to larger audiences. After Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight was not included in the Best Picture category, the academy received backlash for snubbing the film.

The Academy's board has voted to add a new category to honor "popular film", marking the first time in almost two decades that a category has been added to the award slate. "[We] took this charge seriously".

This isn't the first time that the Academy has tried to shake up the way that it hands out awards to avoid giving out hardware exclusively to more avant garde fare. Sure. Will it mean as much if it's in a special category that some fans view as a consolation prize that lessens the impact of the blockbusters while also potentially dulling the shine on the Best Picture category? Since their Best Picture no longer represents what the ticket buyers like they HAVE to do this.
