White Helmet rescuers evacuated from Syria

More than 250 White Helmets have been killed in the war since 2013.

The US, UK, Germany and Canada had all been aiding the White Helmets logistically in recent months.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi tweeted Sunday that the country had originally planned to evacuate 800 Syrians but the actual number settled at 422. It posted a video online showing its soldiers handing out water bottles to the evacuees.

"Today, I will meet with a Russian delegation headed by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov in accordance with an agreement reached with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with whom I held a telephone conversation a few days ago", Netanyahu said at a weekly cabinet meeting.

"White Helmets have been the target of attacks and, due to their high profile, we judged that, in these particular circumstances, the volunteers required immediate protection", it said. "There were lots of children", said one Israeli.

WATCH: The Israeli army on Sunday distributed footage showing an overnight operation to evacuate Syrian "White Helmets" through Israel to Jordan. The evacuation came as thousands of other Syrians have massed along the border with the Golan Heights, as Syrian forces continue airstrikes nearby.

Syria's foreign ministry called it a "smuggling operation" that was evidence of a Western conspiracy to overthrow the government.

They offered services where state institutions and services are non-existent. They are often targeted during attacks. Damascus's ally Russian Federation has accused the group of staging chemical weapons attacks on civilians and blaming them on the government, a charge that has never been proven.

In June, Israel fired a missile at a drone that approached its airspace near the Syrian frontier.

Putin, Assad's most powerful ally, cited the need to restore the situation along the Golan borders to the state that prevailed before the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in 2011.

In a quick offensive, Syrian government forces, backed by Russian air forces, have been advancing from the east on areas held by the opposition in the strategic southwestern region that straddles the Jordanian border and the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel in 1967. They operate mostly in rebel-held territory where almost all civil services have collapsed.

The White Helmets fight fires and carry out repairs in war zones.

"We are still in danger", Abu Muhanad, another White Helmet member, told CNN.

The officials said planning for the evacuation has been taking place for some time, but accelerated after last week's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels.

Air strikes by regime ally Russian Federation, meanwhile, on a southern jihadist holdout killed six civilians, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said.

They will now remain there for roughly three months before being resettled in Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany. "We tried by all means, but the roads were not safe", White Helmets member Abu Laith told CNN. "They acted exclusively on territories under the control of Islamic radicals, staged blatant falsifications, which were used then as a pretext to raise accusations against the Syrian authorities", the ministry stated.

Close to one million Syrians are registered with the U.N.'s refugee agency in Lebanon. "Had the global community done this much earlier and also offered safe haven to the rebel leaders they've been backing, they could have helped get irreconcilables out of the equation and reduce the amount of killing and destruction". The area houses several defense ministry facilities.
