U.S. ambassador tries to lower expectation for Trump-Putin meeting

Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin will meet July 15 in Helsinki, Finland.

Ahead of the NATO Summit in Brussels next week, President Donald Trump has said he would ask NATO members to start paying their bills as the U.S. is not going to take care of everything.

Trump has repeatedly cast doubt on the conclusion of the US intelligence community that Russian Federation meddled in the election and has dismissed the investigation into potential collusion with members of his campaign as a "witch hunt" meant to delegitimize he presidency.

President Donald Trump is prepared to discuss Russian election meddling and other "malign" activities when he meets one-on-one with President Vladimir Putin later this month, the U.S. ambassador to Russia said.

"The president believes a better relationship with Russia would be good for both America and Russia, but the ball really is in Russia's court and the president will continue to hold Russia accountable for its malign activity", Huntsman said on a conference call.

"The president has determined that now is the time for direct communication between himself and president Putin and it is in the interests of the United States, the interests of Russian Federation and the interests of peace and security around the world", the official said.

President Donald Trump and his U.S. delegation intend to raise the issues of arms control, Ukraine, Syria and election meddling during their meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a senior administration told reporters Thursday.

In addition, a private meeting has raised eyebrows due to an ongoing investigation from Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

"They're going, "Will President Trump be prepared?" At Trump's rally, the president suggested he had done enough to allay fears among Americans that he did not view USA allies favorably. "We're entering with our eyes wide open, but peace is always worth the effort".

Trump's decision to hit Germany, France and other top European exporters with steel and aluminium tariffs has done nothing to reverse his low popularity on the continent, and on Thursday he returned to another contentious topic-allied defense spending. Trump also rejected the joint communique signed by leaders at the conclusion of the meeting, launching personal attacks against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the process.

The planned July 16 head-to-head between the U.S. and Russian leaders will follow a delicate North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels.

The summit will include a one-on-one sit down followed by an expanded bilateral meeting with advisers and a working lunch.

"You can't solve problems if you're not talking about them".
