Roger Stone says he's 'probably' the unnamed person in Mueller indictment

As several experts, including USA Today columnist Cheri Jacobus, were quick to note, Stone's claim that he communicated only with Trump himself during the campaign could be seen to draw a direct line from Trump to Stone to the Russian intelligence agents posing as "Guccifer 2.0".

On July 27, 2016, Donald Trump denied Russian Federation was the likely culprit in the email hacks, but also announced, "Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing". Stone claims that his communication with "Guccifer 2.0" was "so perfunctory, brief and banal I had forgotten it".

Earlier Friday, Stone acknowledged to CNN that an exchange in the indictment matches messages he previously released, but initially maintained that he did not believe that he is the unnamed person in the indictment. Stone, during the 2016 campaign, was also in touch with WikiLeaks, which published thousands of the stolen Democratic emails online, and is believed to be the "Organization 1" mentioned in Friday's indictments, as Vox also reported.

On Friday, a federal grand jury charged 12 Russian intelligence officers with hacking Democratic computer networks in 2016 in the most detailed US accusation yet that Moscow meddled in the election to help Republican Donald Trump.

Humans let the hackers in: The Russians didn't need to probe systems for software weaknesses; they allegedly got in via the front door by sending "spearphishing" e-mails to trick campaign officials to click on bogus links like "Hillary-clinton-favorable-rating.xlsx" that revealed their passwords. "I think that you'll be rewarded mightily by our press".

"I don't think it is me because I wasn't in regular contact with members of the Trump campaign", he said.

The two-part operation started with a "spearphishing" effort in early 2016, the indictment said. Look, (Deputy Attorney General Rod) Rosenstein said in his comments that they knew of no crime by USA citizens.

Nunberg added that he thought Stone is "a critical piece for Bob Mueller".

The indictment charges that the conspirators "received a request for stolen materials from a candidate for the U.S. Congress", and "sent the candidate stolen documents".

"This exchange is entirely public and provides no evidence of collaboration or collusion with Guccifer 2.0 or anyone else in the alleged hacking of the DNC emails, as well as taking place many weeks after the events described in today's indictment", Stone said. The US congressional candidate who asked for stolen documents and the person who communicated with the conspirators and with the Trump campaign were not charged in the indictment.
