F1 Raceweek: Leader Vettel heads home

I just was open, said this is how it was.

And it was another frustrating day for Williams - celebrating their 700th race start in Formula 1 - as both Sergey Sirotkin and Lance Stroll retired once again, leaving the historic team bottom of the constructor standings with just four points from the first 11 races of the season. "He stayed out and I had to stop".

"When it rained, I knew I would have a good position", he said.

Lewis Hamilton heads to Hockenheim for this week's German Grand Prix eight points adrift of title rival Sebastian Vettel.

It features fast straights in the first half of the 4.6-kilometer (2.85-mile) track, meaning fans can hope for a thrilling 67-lap speed duel between Mercedes and Ferrari.

Pushed on whether the team was Ferrari, he replied: "You can make whatever assumption you want".

"It's obviously very, very hard from that position and highly unlikely but you've always got to believe", added the four times champion, who said a long prayer before the race started. "I did a long prayer before the race. This was up there with them".

Hamilton won the French Grand Prix to move 14 points clear of Vettel, but a Mercedes strategy error then cost him the lead at the following round in Austria before a mechanical retirement ensured he scored zero points. Pretty much within a few races.

"The tyres weren't fresh, but it was slippery for everyone".

The luckless Vettel, still seeking his first victory on his "home" track 30 kilometres from his birthplace, was left to reflect on a near-perfect weekend wrecked by one split-second mistake on lap 52. Taking positives as a team, flawless result for us, " said Bottas, who added - seemingly half-heartedly - that he "understood" the team's call. After hitting the barriers, he punched his steering wheel in frustration. Other countries are prepared to fund the grand prix and I think that's where the main problem is.

That error came just over a lap before Vettel went straight on at Sachskurve at relatively low speed, but the home favorite was unable to turn the vehicle before the front wing was buried in the barrier and he couldn't rejoin.

"Live to fight another day, another opportunity to rise - I'll try, I'll give everything tomorrow to see how high I can get up, but it's not going to be like Silverstone". With Mercedes wobbling, and Hamilton getting agitated, the timing seems right for Vettel to strike another blow at Hockenheim on Sunday.

Further back, the tire decisions saw a number of cars - including both Renaults - on intermediates behind the Safety Car but they eventually all pit for ultrasofts, leaving Nico Hulkenberg in fifth place ahead of the Force India pair of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon.

Sweden's Marcus Ericsson put Sauber in the points with ninth and New Zealander Brendon Hatley was 10th for Toro Rosso.
