Chattanooga woman victim of the Bahama tour boat explosion

Chattanooga woman victim of the Bahama tour boat explosion

"One of them said she couldn't feel her legs so my son jumped into the water to help her", he told the Bahamas Tribune.

A tropical vacation turned tragedy for an American family when their tour boat in the Bahamas exploded, killing one woman and injuring several others. She's now in a medically induced coma in critical condition; her mother was also severely injured.

The U.S. Coast Guard Southeast reported it assisted the Royal Bahamas Police Force on Saturday after receiving a request for help. With the support of the family, we have launched a GoFundMe page, in hopes to raise $50,000.00. Stacey Bender has broken bones and Brooke Schaffer and Paul Bender have cuts and bruises. Sheila Jones and John Inman were named as other passengers on the boat, but they did not suffer serious injuries. "The kind words and prayers are very much needed and appreciated", it reads.

Royal Bahamas Police Force spokesperson Chanta Knowles confirmed the explosion happened on a boat carrying 12 people - 10 Americans and two Bahamians - shortly after 9 a.m. on Saturday.

A video of the incident, filmed from a nearby boat and posted to YouTube, shows the vessel covered in flames with thick black smoke rising.

Exuma police are leading the investigation.

It's unclear what caused the explosion, although it appeared to involve the engine. "This is a sad day for Exuma and a sad day for our American friends".

The U.S. Coast Guard said in a news release that it provided assistance, transporting four American citizens to Florida after the explosion. "We are saddened and our hearts are hurting, but we will get through this together", he wrote on Facebook.
