Aussies 'feared for safety' after Manila basketball brawl

Aussies 'feared for safety' after Manila basketball brawl

Nine players from the Philippines, along with four from Australia, were ultimately ejected, leaving the home team with just three players on the court.

A disciplinary investigation has been opened by the International Basketball Federation who host the FIBA World Cup, taking place next August.

On Monday, during a FIBA World Cup qualifying match between Australia and the Philippines, absolute chaos broke out.

Moore said Australian players, coaches and officials held genuine fears for their physical safety in what he described as a "tinderbox" of tension in the Philippines, where basketball is the most popular sport.

Australian and Filipino basketball players can expect "significant penalties" for their part in a vicious all-in brawl, Sydney Kings head coach Andrew Gaze says.

From the Philippines, Calvin Abueva, Japeth Aguilar, Andray Blatche, Jayson Castro, Carl Cruz, R.R. Pogoy, Terrence Romeo, Troy Rosario and Matthew Wright were all ejected.

It started with a couple of fouls by Philippines player Roger Pogoy against Boomer Chris Goulding, which saw Aussie Daniel Kickert retaliate by throwing an elbow back at him. But at the same time we're saying that we emphatize that they have to act as a team which will not justify their conduct. "We are hosting this game, and this is basketball".

The league announced on Twitter that Gilas Pilipinas players have been invited by the league to a meeting on Thursday "to discuss the incident that happened in their game against Australia".

Longley, the first Australian to play in the National Basketball Association, raced into the Filipino pack and stood over Goulding, protecting him from the swarm of attackers. "We already restrained the players before the game ... it's hard to restrain them".

"We absolutely refute that".

Maker, who was playing for Australia, can be seen in footage of the fight launching himself in the air at members of the other team.

The game was halted for several minutes as referees reviewed the brawl in an OB van outside the stadium to avoid biases.
