Apple Music Now Has More Subscribers Than Spotify in the U.S.

With more than 20 million paying users in the US, Apple Music has just taken the lead over its rival Spotify in an all-important market, the media reported. While services like Pandora or YouTube bring in massive amounts of users, they don't boast as big of a paid subscription base as Spotify. Indeed, according to a report from Digital Music News, Apple Music has finally surpassed Spotify in overall United States subscribers.

According to the source, globally Apple claims 45 million subscribers with 5-10 million additional free trial subscriptions. Spotify falls into the same bracket, but has now dropped into second place when it comes to popularity. That report now ranks Apple Music as first in the United States, at least among primarily on-demand music streaming services (Sirius XM Satellite Radio, which operates in North America exclusively, has more than 33 million subscribers). But subscriber numbers may not be the only place Spotify is lagging behind Apple.

Both services are said to have more than 20M U.S. subscribers, with Apple Music said to be "a hair ahead" ... But while the headlines have been zeroed in on every move the platform makes, Apple Music has been steadily and silently edging ahead of the competition.

It's not entirely clear why Apple is beating Spotify in the U.S. - it could be mere brand loyalty - but it will be interesting to see how this corporate rivalry progresses in the coming months. In March, the platform hit the 38 million paid subscriber milestone, going on to shoot past 40 million subscribers the following month.
