Angelique Kerber beats Serena Williams to win Wimbledon title

Angelique Kerber beats Serena Williams to win Wimbledon title

It was a rematch of the 2016 final, which Williams won, but this time there was no doubt who was the better player and Kerber was able to celebrate her third grand slam title, becoming the first German singles champion at Wimbledon since Steffi Graf in 1996.

The first in the 2016 Australian Open where Kerber took home the win in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) and the second coming at Wimbledon in 2016.

Kerber though needs to serve better to make sure she doesn't gift easy points to her American opponent, who is staring at history.

Serena Williams goes for her eighth Wimbledon title and first major championship since giving birth to her daughter, Olympia, on September 1.

So much for Serena Williams's fairy tale ending at Wimbledon.

The German former world number one showed her intent in the first game, breaking the Williams serve that forms the backbone of her game.

Williams sensed a chance at 1-1 but with Kerber at 15-30 she made a awful hash of putting away an easy volley off a poor Kerber lob and Kerber was steadfast to keep ahead. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, is playing just her fourth tournament since returning to action in March.

Kerber dropped to the grass when a netted service return gave her victory. "But the thing I took from her was her movement and that she hit a lot of balls back, but also with intent. I'm literally just getting started".

Williams played doubles with her sister Venus Williams at the Fed Cup in February.

However, to numerous viewers, "all that she can be" is more than enough.

"Well, I think it was a happy story", Williams said with a smile.

This is the first time the two have made a public appearance together without their husbands, Prince Harry and Prince William!

"She's an incredible person, Angelique is, and she's a really good friend, so I'm really happy for her", Williams expressed.

"Honestly, I just feel like it was a necessary evil", she said.

She delivered a pair of down-the-line forehand passing winners to collect the last break she'd need, for a 4-2 edge in the second set.

The final started more than two hours late, because they had to wait for the end of Novak Djokovic's five-set victory over Rafael Nadal in a men's semifinal that was suspended the night before.

Meghan rocked her signature "messy bun" hair style and looked chic in a striped blue-and-white shirt and wide-leg cream pant by Ralph Lauren, while Kate wore a white patterned dress.
