Vettel and Raikkonen subdued after hard day for Ferrari

Vettel and Raikkonen subdued after hard day for Ferrari

There was a little bit more, but I'm still happy.

Verstappen, who made a sensational teenage arrival in F1 with a victory on his debut with Red Bull at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, crashed in practice at the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago and had to start from the back of the grid.

If Hamilton is to secure what would be a record seventh pole in Canada on Saturday the Briton will have to squeeze more out an engine that is running in its seventh race. Thanks to the team; thanks for fixing the vehicle yesterday after I hit the wall a little bit.

The crowds in Montreal saw the fastest ever laps on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, and the Mercedes garage were not happy to be outstripped for speed. The Dutchman had topped all three practice sessions leading into qualifying. The vehicle is working well and we're just missing out on top speed.

Late in making his qualifying sims, the Australian was hampered by traffic but eventually managed to post a best time just 0.405s off his teammate's pace and good enough for third.

Vettel, who is 14 points behind Hamilton in the championship and has a great chance to make up a serious amount of ground, said: "Yesterday we were a bit in trouble and I just couldn't get the rhythm, but today it switched on and what a day".

Before qualifying began, Pierre Gasly was forced to resort to the old-spec Honda power unit prior to the start of the qualifying session.

Hamilton tops the championship leaderboard as he pursues his fifth Formula One title.

When asked if he felt Red Bull had the pace for pole after seeing teammate Daniel Ricciardo go quickest in Q2, he said: "I knew we had a good vehicle, but I wanted to wait and see how competitive we would be in Q3".

It was clearly a strategic scrap as the teams were aiming to use the tyres in Q2 that would suit them best to start the race.

"There would have been gains and I think it would have been a close fight for the pole with the new engine parts, but we're going to get it later", said Bottas. "If we can escape this weekend without it, I'd rather take it somewhere else".

Despite his hard start to the season, Verstappen is often praised for being one of the exciting drivers and prospects in Formula 1, with many believing he's a champion waiting for his chance.

Mercedes were first out in Q3 and smashed the records, Bottas topping Hamilton in 1:10.857 before Vettel beat that.
