United States issues new China health alert over mystery illness

American investigators have not yet determined who or what is causing the symptoms and illnesses.

Friday's alert called for people to be attentive of symptoms including "dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, fatigue, cognitive issues, visual problems, ear complaints and hearing loss, and difficulty sleeping".

CNN reported earlier this week a number of U.S. personnel in China have been sent back to the United States for further health screenings after concerns over reports of mysterious acoustic incidents similar to the Cuba "sonic attacks".

The symptoms are similar to those exhibited by US personnel in Cuba after they heard odd noises in an apparent sonic attack.

The official says the two individuals from the embassy in Havana are undergoing medical evaluation.

The United States has pulled out two more of its workers from its embassy in Cuba and is testing them for possible brain injury, three US officials told The Associated Press on Friday, amid concerns they may have been affected by mysterious health incidents harming USA diplomats in Cuba and China.

University of Pennsylvania researchers studied that troubling pattern among US government employees stationed in Cuba earlier this year, and now they are evaluating a similar scenario among others stationed in China, the Associated Press reports. "Instead, move to a different location".

There have been several reports of possible sonic attacks at the US consulate in Guangzhou, China. Most of the incidents were accompanied by freaky, unexplained sounds that initially led US investigators to suspect a sonic attack. "The Ministry of Foreign Relations reiterates that no evidence of the alleged incidents has been presented, and maintains its unwavering commitment to cooperate with USA authorities".

In April, Canada, whose personnel were also stricken, said it would remove families of diplomats posted at its embassy in Cuba as information from medical specialists has raised concerns of a new type of brain injury.

China has said it had looked into the Guangzhou case but came up with no clues about the cause of the symptoms.

Linda Chen, who runs a coffee shop in the area, said she was mystified as to why only certain people seemed to have been affected in an area known for its comfort and safety.
