Sessions Turns Family Separations Into Well-Received Punchline At GOP Event

"I'm here to support you and give my help, whatever I can" on "behalf of children and the families", Mrs. Trump said as she sat down with officials at a U.S. Border Patrol facility in Tucson, Arizona- her first stop.

By the time First Lady Melania Trump rolled up to a child-migrant shelter as part of a swarm of SUVs, police cruisers, and cops on motorcycles, the Phoenix activists were ready to meet her. She met children at one of the facilities.

There was no discussion of the thousands of children the Trump administration has forcibly separated from their parents and families.

The visit drew more attention for a jacket Mrs. Trump wore that read, "I really don't care, do u?" on the back.

ABC's Lauren Pearle and Justin Doom contributed reporting to this article.

The first lady boarded her plane wearing a black shirt and white slacks for the flight.

This time, however, she's apparently traveling without a controversial wardrobe item.

A protest against the separation of children from immigrant parents is planned for Saturday in downtown Muskegon.

Melania Trump - who President Trump said raised the issue of family separation with him - continues to discuss the border situation with the president, said her communications director, Stephanie Grisham. Her staff says she has good intentions, but that message was muddied last week when she visited the border in Texas. Though Trump reversed the policy amid massive backlash from both parties, the fate of children now being held remains unclear.

Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said 1,600 people, including 539 in families, tried to enter the United States illegally the day before.

"Thank you for all your hard work that you do, and I know how risky and difficult your daily jobs are", Trump said at a briefing with border patrol and immigration enforcement officials and local ranchers.

Protesters spent Thursday morning outside a facility for detained children in Tucson that's operated by the non-profit Southwest Key.

President Donald Trump was last week forced into a U-turn on separating migrant children from their parents, but about 2,000 children remained split from their parents, according to official figures released last weekend.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions joked about family separations during a speaking event in Los Angeles on Tuesday, just days after the Trump administration retreated from its policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the USA border.
