The sister of celebrated fashion designer Kate Spade says she may have taken her own life because of a struggle with mental illness.

Spade, 55, hanged herself with a scarf and was found by a housekeeper in her Park Avanue apartment.

Kate Spade stepped away from the limelight after selling her company in 2007 but she recently mounted a comeback.

She was working as an accessories editor at Mademoiselle magazine when she launched her eponymous brand with her husband in 1993.

"We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly", Kate's family said in a statement to to the New York Daily News. The 55-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Spade's handbags were a must-have, and she ranked among the NY designers to cement the minimalist look.

A statement from the family via in NY spokeswoman on Tuesday had said: "We are all devastated by today's tragedy". As the shocking news spread, Bravolebs took to social media to speak out about the death and what the designer and brand meant to them.

"I grew up in the Midwest, where you have to have it (a fashion item) because you like it, not because you're supposed to have it", she told the AP in 2004.

Then the fashion maven makes an excuse for her casual get-up.

Investigators say she left behind a note addressed to her 13-year-old daughter, indicating that she was dealing with financial and marital issues. I don't know. I think something a little more interesting.
