How a Socialist Latinx Millennial Beat a Wall Street Favorite

How a Socialist Latinx Millennial Beat a Wall Street Favorite

"We've got people. They've got money", Ocasio-Cortez said in her viral campaign commercial.

She beat Joseph Crowley, a career politician who had been expected to one day take over for Nancy Pelosi as leading Dem in the House.

Shapiro said she is a member of the "howling at the moon branch of the Democratic Party" that "throws out radical proposals" and then claims "moral clarity lies in making proposals that are completely untenable and never will be paid for".

Ocasio-Cortez was relatively unknown before defeating Rep. Joe Crowley, who represented New York's 14th District for nearly two decades and was thought to be a shoo-in as the next House Speaker.

The Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidate who trounced one of Congress's top Democratic leaders in a stunning primary challenge said Wednesday she would support President Donald Trump's impeachment, citing violations of the Constitution's Emoluments Clause. If Ocasio-Cortez wins in November, she will be the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

"No idea who this guy is, hundreds of folks walked into the hall open to the public last night", Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.

New York's District 14, which encompasses working class neighborhoods in both the Bronx and Queens, has always been particularly progressive, but Ocasio-Cortez leans even farther left by today's Democratic party standards.

The video clip, shared widely on social media, shows a candidate in disbelief: It captures the moment Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez realizes that, at age 28, she has beaten a 10-term congressman in a Democratic primary. "So I think it created a lot of trust in our community and our message really inspired a lot of folks that don't usually turn out in an off-year midterm primary".

Ocasio-Cortez specifically cited the Emoluments Clause, which restricts federal officials from receiving any sort of gifts from foreign governments while in office.

"The increased militarization and willingness to commit human rights abuses - we are at that point", she said.

And though Ocasio-Cortez moved back to NY after college, she's not entirely shying away from MA politics.

Ocasio-Cortez and Bunkeddeko have also exposed incumbent weaknesses.

She has repeatedly rejected the supposed divide between economic concerns and "identity politics", a frequently invoked diagnostic tool for Democratic races, as a false dichotomy. There are almost 236,000 Democrats registered in the 14th Congressional District, which covers parts of the Bronx and Queens. But first he has to get past the 28-year-old progressive, who has garnered national attention as she has waged war against Crowley's corporate donations and centrist policy record. We will see how she holds up now that money and power are calling.

"But is the Democratic Party not doing that?" she said.

"The Trump administration is a threat to everything we stand for here in Queens and the Bronx, and if we don't win back the House this November, we will lose the nation we love".

When a reporter asked Pelosi if "Democratic House leadership" should "look that way" toward an increasingly "younger, more female, more diverse, more progressive" Democratic Party, Pelosi replied, "Well, I'm female, I'm progressive".
