First ladies call for changes on child separation policy

Several religious groups, including some conservative ones, have pushed to stop the practice of separating immigrant children from their parents. "That's traumatizing to the children who are innocent victims, and it is contrary to our values in this country".

On a related note is what's happening at the border - separating children from their parents - is this an administration policy?

Michelle Obama joined her fellow former first lady Laura Bush Monday in criticizing the hard-line Trump administration immigration policy that has led to families being separated at the border.

"The U.S. will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding facility", President Donald Trump told the world this morning, via a speech to the National Space Council. Her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said Sunday, "She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart". But the policy is getting more controversial by the day, and everyone from former first ladies to ex-White House staffers are coming out of the woodwork to decry it.

Amid the global outcry, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Monday that the growing crisis at the U.S. -Mexico border "is not new".

US first lady Michelle Obama, right, and former USA first lady Laura Bush laugh as they participate in an African First Ladies Summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, July 2, 2013. Asked whether there was any daylight between the president and first lady on the issue of family separation, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders chose to instead address the administration's dispute with Democrats.

Lawmakers fan out across the country to hammer President Trump's zero tolerance immigration policy; William La Jeunesse reports from San Diego.

Almost 2,000 children have been taken from their parents since Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the "zero tolerance" policy, which directs Homeland Security officials to refer all cases of illegal entry into the United States for prosecution.

Attorneys at the hearings said the immigrants had brought two dozen boys and girls with them to the USA, and the judge replied that he didn't know what would happen to their children.

TRUMP: "Democrats can fix their forced family breakup at the Border by working with Republicans on new legislation, for a change!"

Chants of "Hey, hey don't take those kids away!" illustrated a chorus of anger and frustration on display around the country. "It won't be. You look at what's happening in Europe, you look at what's happening in other places - we can't allow that to happen to the United States, not on my watch", Trump said.

Amid the criticism, the president dug in Monday, again falsely blaming Democrats for the crisis.

Trump has sought to use the widespread outrage over the family separations to push through other immigration priorities that have stalled in Congress, such as funding for his long-promised wall along the Mexican border.

Van Hollen, a Democrat, called the policy of breaking up families who have entered the country illegally "cruel".

Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who ran unsuccessfully against Trump in 2016 for their party's presidential nomination, said he would introduce legislation this week to halt family separations.
