Before World Cup, another injury fear for Belgium’s Kompany

Before World Cup, another injury fear for Belgium’s Kompany

Manchester City club captain Vincent Kompany will be flying to Russian Federation for the World Cup this summer, having been selected in Roberto Martinez's final squad, despite sustaining an injury in their most recent friendly.

The 32-year-old Kompany, a key part of Belgium's defence, abruptly left the pitch in the 55th minute of the match after appearing to hurt himself when lunging for the ball.

Martínez also named Los Angeles FC defender Laurent Ciman as a reserve in case Kompany's injury proves too serious for him to play in Russian Federation.

With a team full of star players, is this the year Belgium finally break through on the world stage?

"Vincent Kompany is a true leader", Martinez told the media. We need to make the outfield players squad 24 hours before Panama, that is the 17th of June. Then we will get a good opportunity to make a diagnosis.

"Christian Benteke has been the toughest decision. His leadership is essential for us".

Manchester United man Romelu Lukaku is expected to lead the line, while Chelsea's Batshuayi will offer stiff competition for a starting spot after recovering from an ankle problem.

Martinez also confirmed that Kompany will be given until the last possible moment to prove his fitness ahead of Belgium's first World Cup fixture against Panama on June 18.

Goalkeepers: Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea), Simon Mignolet (Liverpool), Koen Casteels (VfL Wolfsburg).

Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels, Lazio defender Jordan Lukaku, Watford's Christian Kabasele and Crystal Palace forward Christian Benteke were the men to be cut from the initial 28-man selection.
