Apple Has Stopped Approving Telegram for iOS Updates

Mostly due to the fact that it was banned for refusing to hand over private encryption keys that would allow the Kremlin to spy on users.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov on Thursday revealed that Apple has been blocking the company's iOS updates ever since Russian authorities ordered Cupertino to remove the encrypted messaging app from its App Store.

"We believe we did the only possible thing, preserving the right of our users to privacy in a troubled country", Durov said earlier today. He said that had meant Telegram was also unable to fully comply with new privacy rules put in place in the European Union last week. It says it is continuing its efforts to resolve the issue and promises to keep users updated.

Under the concept discussed internally and raised with potential partners, users searching in Pinterest's app for "drapes" might turn up an ad distributed by Apple for an interior-design app, or Snap users searching for "NFL" might see an ad for a ticket-reseller app, one of the people said.

On Friday, the GDPR user data and privacy protection law went into effect in Europe, which is why your email inbox was spammed by all the online services you're subscribed to.

Telegram is still available for download both inside Russia and the rest of the world, but it is a version that has not been updated since the Russian court ruling.

"Unfortunately, some Telegram features, such as stickers, don't work correctly under iOS 11.4 that was just released - even though we fixed this issue weeks ago", Durov wrote minutes ago in his Telegram channel.

"Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience".

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

"We sent them [Apple] a legally binding letter and are awaiting their legally binding reply".

Its hopping had the unintended outcome of RKN knocking out entire swathes of IP addresses to stop Telegram, some 19 million at its peak, causing a number of other services to go down as well. But it seems the impact of those demands is being felt worldwide. The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple plans to build on its existing system for selling ads within App Store search results, enabling iOS developers to get paid to display Apple-offered ads within in-app searches.
