U.S. move on Iran threatens €143m Irish export trade

U.S. move on Iran threatens €143m Irish export trade

Iran's Foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in Beijing today on the first leg of a whirlwind diplomatic tour planned to rescue the nuclear deal left on the brink of collapse after the U.S. pulled out.

As a quid pro quo, all global sanctions against Iran, the fifth largest exporter of oil, by United States and other countries, were lifted and Iran's economy, which had suffered all these years, was able to revive and come back to its feet.

Top Iranian officials, including Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani, have said Europeans must give the required guarantees in order for Tehran to stay in the deal.

Germany acknowledged it could be hard to protect companies doing business with Iran as a senior US official renewed a threat of sanctions against European firms following Washington's decision to pull out of a nuclear deal with Tehran.

Trump's decision on Tuesday to renege on the 2015 nuclear accord with Iran and reimpose sanctions against Tehran came with the threat of penalties against any foreign firms involved in business there.

On Sunday Zarif met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, where he hoped to depict a "clearer image of the future of the JCPOA".

He will later head to Moscow and Brussels.

British Prime Minister Theresa May raised the issue in a Friday phone call with Trump, a spokesperson for the European leader said.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday that the United States had failed to reach an agreement with the European nations on the historic Iran nuclear deal.

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said, however, that it could be hard to protect European firms from any fallout from the US decision.

The other Western members of the agreement seem to have wanted to save the deal not so much because of its inherent redeeming features, but rather to continue their voluminous trade with Iran.

Trump's tough talk now on sanctions is at odds with what he told France's Emmanuel Macon and May just six months ago as he moved toward yanking the US out of the deal.

The deal's proponents say it is crucial to forestalling a nuclear Iran and preventing wider war in the Middle East.

But the reach of the U.S. financial system, the dominance of the USA dollar, Trump's efforts to weaken the WTO and the presence of European companies' operations in the United States all weaken any potential EU measures.

After China, the Iranian foreign minister was scheduled to fly to Moscow for talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and then Brussels to consult with British, French and German foreign ministers as well as European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.

Despite the U.S. exit, Britain and Iran expressed their commitment to ensuring that the accord is upheld, according to a statement released by British Prime Minister Theresa May's office.

French President Emmanuel Macron held phone talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, according to a Kremlin statement, which said they had "confirmed Russia and France's commitment to make the deal work".
