Trump's CIA nominee, Gina Haspel, says torture doesn't work

"Do you believe that the previous interrogation techniques were immoral?"

Gina Haspel wants the nation to put dark times behind it, which is not about to happen if she is appointed director of the Central Intelligence Agency. That inventory has 90 tapes of interrogation of suspected Al Qaeda operative Abu Zubaydah and two videos of "Detainee #2".

After a 33-year career spent nearly entirely undercover, Haspel pitched herself to the committee as an intelligence veteran who has the loyalty of the CIA workforce and the knowledge to run its espionage and other operations around the globe. While there, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, an al-Qaeda suspect accused of masterminding the bombing of an American destroyer off the coast of Yemen, was tortured.

Protesters disrupted the hearing shouting, "Prosecute the torturers!" and "Bloody Gina!"

Sen. Joe Manchin III on Wednesday probably ended suspense about whether Gina Haspel would win confirmation as the CIA's next director. The senator said she is concerned that Haspel "is not the best signal to the workforce of that agency, to the American people or to our neighbors around the globe".

A Kentucky woman may soon break the glass ceiling of the nation's spy agency, but only if she can convince enough lawmakers to put aside concerns about her alleged ties to torturous interrogations.

Democrats pressed Ms Haspel on a 2005 decision to destroy tapes of interrogations when she was chief of staff to Jose Rodriguez, then the CIA's clandestine service chief.

"They were the highest lawyers in the land, including the attorney general". Tuesday's West Virginia primary races, in which Manchin was victorious, may have brought home for the senator the potential of a contentious race in November, prompting him to bolster his non-partisan image by crossing party lines to back Haspel. Haspel's played pivotal roles in the agency's most controversial recent actions.

The Times did not specifically mention that the interrogation techniques in question had been approved by the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) advising the Executive Branch, which meant that Haspel herself had no control over whether the techniques were approved. To quote Sen. Heinrich, "it's not that complicated;" only women of the far left are the real heroes, the only ones who can be included in this history.

"I recall my first foreign agent meeting was on a dark, moonless night with an agent I'd never met before".

King's statement comes hours after Haspel testified before the Intelligence Committee, of which he is a member. Some seemed to suggest that Haspel had the kind of experience required to stand up to Trump's attacks on the intelligence community, steady an erratic president, and "speak truth to power", a phrase repeatedly invoked.

Vukmir's press release included a freaky image showing Baldwin with Khalid Sheikh Muhammed, the man accused of planning the September 11 attacks and a torture victim, who asked to submit testimony about Haspel.

"It is a unusual business that we ask our intelligence officials to play to the edge of the law".

"A confirmation is more than a character judgment about the nominee", wrote Benjamin Wittes, senior fellow in governance studies at the Brookings Institution, yesterday in a Lawfare post on the Haspel nomination. Her refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality is disqualifying. "My parents gave me a very strong moral compass", she said early on. Trump wants Haspel to be C.I.A. director precisely because of her past. She can vote however she wants.

In reality, Democrats and even some Republicans have opposed or remained skeptical of Haspel because of the great deal of secrecy surrounding her career.
