Trump CIA nominee Gina Haspel reportedly offered to withdraw

Haspel's vow to fight any attempt to resurrect the programme puts her in the same camp as Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, who has advised President Donald Trump that he doesn't think torture is an effective interrogation tactic.

She told the White House she would step aside to avoid a brutal Senate Intelligence Committee confirmation hearing on Wednesday that might damage the CIA, the officials told the Post.

"Those who know the true Gina Haspel - who worked with her, who served with her, who helped her confront terrorism, Russian Federation and countless other threats to our nation - they nearly uniformly support her", Central Intelligence Agency spokesman Ryan Trapani said in a statement Sunday.

Opposition to Ms. Haspel centers around her 33-year career with the agency, much of it undercover. For one, it appears that Haspel was an "enthusiastic supporter" of the controversial waterboarding program, which casts her in a negative light.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has been among the more vocal critics of Haspel's nomination.

CBS News, citing former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell and former CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden, said on Friday Haspel told Senators in private meetings that she would "never let the CIA restart an interrogation and detention program" if she was confirmed to officially head the agency.

The Washington Post first reported her offer to withdraw. Her nomination would be in jeopardy only if she loses the support of Republicans, who hold a slim 51-49 seat majority in the Senate. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said the more material she reads about Haspel's role in the interrogation program, including the destruction of tapes, the more unsettled she has become.

The release of the disciplinary review may persuade some lawmakers who had been undecided to support Haspel, said congressional officials tracking the nomination process.

After Haspel's provide to withdraw, White Home aides labored to reassure her that she had the president's help.

Only on Saturday afternoon was the White House assured she would not withdraw, the Post quoted the officials as saying.

Short lamented the attacks in recent weeks on Admiral Dr. Ronny Jackson who was briefly nominated to be the secretary of veterans affairs.

Meanwhile, the pieces of information that are known about Haspel are disturbing to those who oppose torture.

Haspel also has told the senators that she believes the government should continue to adhere to current law prohibiting harsh interrogation, the officials said.

She has received robust backing from former intelligence, diplomatic, military and national security officials, who praise her extensive intelligence career.
