Scott Declares State Of Emergency In Florida Due To Alberto

Both Florida and MS declared states of emergency Saturday as Subtropical Storm Alberto heads toward the Gulf of Mexico. This would make Alberto a strong subtropical storm, although well short of the 74 miles per hour threshold for hurricane strength.

There's a 90percent chance that a tropical or subtropical depression or storm may hit the Gulf Coast over Memorial Day weekend.

A storm surge watch and a tropical storm watch are in effect for Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties, the National Weather Service in New Orleans advises.

Alberto, the first named storm of the 2018 Hurricane season, was moving north near 20 km/h with maximum sustained winds near 65 km/h with higher gusts on Saturday, the NWS said. However, conditions are expected to become a little more favorable for development as this system moves north into the central or eastern Gulf by late Friday or early Saturday.

Subtropical Storm Alberto is a little less organized this Saturday morning but a Tropical Storm Watch and Storm Surge Watch remain in effect for parts of Florida, and a Flood Watch has been issued for all of Central Florida, forecasters said. As it travels up the warm waters of the Gulf, it could well become a full tropical storm. It will dump significant amounts of rain across parts of the Yucatan and Cuba, with 10-15 inches possible.

Subtropical Storm Alberto moved Sunday morning toward the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said.

Subtropical Storm Alberto formed Friday on the edge of the Yucatan Peninsula, on the western end of the Caribbean. Weak, brief waterspouts and tornadoes possible.

A flash flood watch has been posted for parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and large areas of Florida.

Tropical-storm force winds will be possible in western Cuba and in the northern Gulf coast area where watches are posted. The National Hurricane Center now puts the chance for development at 70 percent.

Though hurricane season doesn't officially begin for another week, St. Tammany Parish Government and the parish Department of Homeland Securit...
