PM To Hold Informal Summit With Russian Prez Putin On May 21

Sources said Modi would most likely reassure Putin of India's commitment to consolidate ties with Russian Federation in defence, nuclear energy, trade and other key sectors.

The two leaders to exchange views on global matters in a broad& long-term perspective with the objective of further strengthening Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.

"Both leaders will discuss their respective national developmental priorities and bilateral matters", the release said.

This informal summit in Sochi between Modi and Putin is in keeping with the tradition of regular consultations between India and Russian Federation at the highest levels, the ministry said. The meeting comes just weeks after Modi interacted with Chinese president Xi Jinping at the Wuhan summit.

While India and Russian Federation hold an annual bilateral summit every year, this is apart from that but is an initiative to create an atmosphere to look at broader perspective. Russian Federation is the only country - apart from Japan - which has an "annual summit" mechanism with India.

Last week, Doval and foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale visited Moscow to meet Russia's national security adviser and foreign minister Sergey Lavrov besides other senior officials.

However, there had been a perception among observers that the relationship had been drifting, with India apparently moving closer to the U.S. administration under Donald Trump.

Informal summits are in - or so it would seem. "Instead, the focus" will be on discussions on the "big picture" globally, according to observers. Ever since the Trump administration chose to withdraw from the nuclear deal, alleging that Tehran is not fulfilling its commitments, the worldwide community has been working overtime to salvage the deal.

He also mentioned other weapons systems, including the prospective S-500 air defense system that is meant to be precise and powerful enough to hit targets in space. Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in the Kremlin.
